Fortitude and Quiet Determination

Alex Kowbel always perseveres in the face of adversity. During a career of more than 30 years in the Canadian Forces, he served overseas in both the Second World War and the Korean War, and suffered a broken back in the line of duty. When his daughter was only two years old, Alex’s wife died suddenly, leaving him to raise four children largely as a single parent. Now a 96-year old resident of Perley Health, Alex is determined to recruit enough players for a regular bridge game.

2019 Donor Reception

The Perley Health Foundation hosted more than 160 donors on June 12th at our annual Strawberry Social.

With the support of donors, Perley Health continues to pioneer a concept known as continuity of care: providing access to the housing options, supports and services seniors need to live independently for as long as possible. The experience of Mary and Earle MacDonald illustrates the concept well.

Sharing Her Good Fortune

For Claude Chapdelaine, sharing some of her good fortune with others is a simple pleasure. Each year, she donates some of her investments to the Perley Health Foundation, along with other local charities.

Serving His Community

Throughout his life, Edgar (Ned) Rhodes, who passed away earlier this year at age 82, served the community through volunteerism and philanthropy. His generous spirit lives on through the significant donations he made in his will to several charities, including the Perley Health Foundation, a favourite cause.

The Perley Health Foundation is a fully independent, registered charity that raises funds to help Perley Health provide seniors and Veterans every opportunity to enjoy healthy, fulfilling and dignified lives. The Perley Health Foundation is the fundraising arm of the Health Centre and is seeking a motivated and team-oriented individual for the full-time position of Development Manager, Foundation.

The Board of Directors of the Perley Health Foundation is pleased to introduce its new Executive Director, Delphine Haslé, CFRE. Delphine will officially begin her role on July 3.

“It is an honour to lead the fundraising team at Perley Health.” says Delphine. “I look forward to inviting donors to invest in Canada’s very first Centre of Excellence in Frailty-Informed Care and our expanding vibrant Seniors Village. I am passionate about our mission and I am committed to achieving results for Perley Health.”

Farm Fields and Battlefields

As his 100th birthday draws near, John Denzil Sparks relaxes in his room and thinks back over his remarkable life. Although he spent more time working on dairy farms than he did tending to wounded soldiers, he knows that he was forever marked by his five years in uniform.

International Women's Day High Tea

More than 200 people attended the second edition of the International Women’s Day High Tea fundraiser, now an annual event. Attendees honoured women Veterans, including those who call Perley Health home, and raised $4,755. Speakers included Deputy Minister of Defence Jody Thomas and Maj. (Ret’d) Sandra Perron, Perley Health Foundation Board member. The Canadian Military Wives Choir Ottawa and the Army Voices Choir serenaded the room with stirring renditions of old and new classics. Special shawls handmade by Mylène Levesque were presented to some of Perley Health’s newest Women Veterans.

Edith Goodspeed pauses, overcome with emotion, as she thinks back to the young men who were injured or killed on the Second World War battlefields. “The boys were ours. They were wonderful kids,” she said.
